26 - Peter Cooper (1791 - 1883) was a self-taught engineer, philanthropist, presidential candidate and founder of the Cooper Union in New York City which was the nation's first free institute of higher learning. He designed and built the first American locomotive and obtained the first US patent for the manufacture of gelatin which he eventually sold to the originator of Jell-O. |
