The
Humpty Dumpty card is one of the more common mechanical bank
card, but it is one of the most beautiful. Its indifferent
background is more than offset by the striking foreground
image of the clown. The image on this card, as well as the
bank itself, was supposed to resemble Humpty Dumpty the
Clown as portrayed on stage by the popular actor George
Fox. Note the
advertising imprint of the bank's manufacturer, Shepard
Hardware Co., in the panel at the bottom. This card
was printed by the Courier Lith. Co. of Buffalo, New York,
and issued in 1884. It is shown here at 85 percent of actual
size.
