Salesman shows the product to Chinese laundry workers who are alarmed because this "last invention" eliminates the need for washing collars, cuffs and bosoms, which will put them out of business and force them to return to China.
This card exemplifies the strong feelings against the Chinese during the 1880s caused by their willingness to work hard for low wages. Chinese workers had immigrated to build the railroads, and then turned to other occupations when the railroads were completed rather than return to China. A popular slogan used by labor movements during that period was "The Chinese Must Go."
This card was printed by Donaldson Brothers, Five Points, N.Y., and is shown at seventy percent of its actual size.
